Roadway lighting is usually made up of four components.These components include:
- High-Mount Lighting - These fixtures are normally 20-30 feet in height and provide lighting for the street and sidewalks. They provide the uniform lighting along the roadways and sidewalks
- Medium-Mount Lighting - These fixtures normally range between 8-15 feet in height and provide additional light to sidewalks. Normally in the shape of a globe, these lighting fixtures provide additional light for pedestrians in a decorative, uniform manner, fitting the city's image.
- Low-Mount Lighting - These fixtures are usually located in areas of caution and may be in the form of a signal or to illuminate areas of interest on the street.
- Focal Points - These lights are typically used for special visual interest. They may be used to illuminate public works of art or billboards.
Hazard or "conflict" areas should be properly illuminated according to local or other applicable lighting codes. Light levels are mandated by law and have requirements to ensure safe passage. Various municipalities may require different light levels to be maintained on roadways. If lighting is unsatisfactory, it should be reported to rectify the situation. Improperly illuminated roadways may also include giving off a glare effect that could be hazardous to pedestrians and motorists alike.
