Uninsured Motorist Law

Uninsured motorist law varies from state to state. Uninsured motorist laws were enacted as a way to give a responsible motorist, who carries automobile insurance, a means to receive compensation should they be involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist. In some states, an uninsured motorist can have their privilege to operate a motor vehicle suspended, and their registration will be revoked, for failing to have insurance. Even if the owner of the uninsured vehicle wasn't actually driving the car at the time of the accident, they can still be found liable and face these penalties. The only exception to this law is if the uninsured vehicle was stolen. In other states it isn't even possible to register a car unless proof of insurance is shown. If auto insurance is dropped at anytime after the car is registered, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will automatically suspend the registration. This is a safeguard for those motorists that try to beat the system.
