I Was Rear-Ended While Trying to Pull Over During a High-Speed Police Car Chase. Who is at Fault?
While I was recently driving on the highway, I became aware of a high-speed police chase behind me. I was traveling in the middle lane and tried to pull over to the shoulder. In my state of panic, I slammed on my brakes accidentally and was rear-ended by another vehicle. Who is at fault in this situation? Am I to blame or the police or the alleged criminal they were chasing?

High-speed police chases kill hundreds and injure thousands of people every year. While the officers engage in these chases to capture a fleeing suspect, they sometimes disregard the safety of other drivers. Two-thirds of those injured or killed stemming from a police chase are innocent drivers and pedestrians. It’s a fact that more people in the United States are killed in high-speed pursuits than by police firearms each year.
During a high-speed chase, you may only hear the police sirens for a few seconds before the cars come whizzing by. Sometimes, not even long enough to get out of the way. These can be complicated cases as state law provides for a limitation of liability when a public employee injures someone in the line of duty.
Police officers are not above the law. If you or a loved one has been injured during a high-speed police car chase, it’s best to seek experienced legal counsel immediately.
