Michael Phelps Involved in Car Accident

August 17, 2009

Olympic gold medal swimmer Michael Phelps was recently involved in a car accident in his hometown of Baltimore when Amanda Virkus failed to obey a red light and caused an accident. She was cited with a maximum penalty of $180 and a three-point mark on her driver’s license.

The crash was not Phelps’ fault, but when police arrived at the scene and examined his license, he was given a citation for driving with an expired license and for failing to establish a residency in Maryland.

He lived in Michigan between the 2004 and 2008 Olympics but moved back to his native Maryland. State law requires that an individual register his or her vehicle with the state. Failure to do so will result in fines.
