Safe Driving Advisory for Motorists From Mn/DOT
An approaching winter storm that could affect holiday travel prompts the Minnesota Department of Transportation to urge drivers to put their safe winter driving skills and attitudes in gear before the storm arrives.
The National Weather Service predicts the storm system will bring rain or freezing rain Thursday morning to parts of Minnesota including the Twin Cities metro area. It predicts snow will start falling in the afternoon with accumulations of two inches in some areas.
Whatever the prevailing weather conditions may be, Mn/DOT urges holiday travelers to plan their trips and drive with extra caution, especially when snowplows are operating.
Mn/DOT urges drivers to follow these safety steps this winter:
•Slow down. Drivers should allow at least five car lengths between their vehicles and a snowplow.
•Test road surfaces frequently by tapping brakes to check for icy conditions.
•Turn on headlights and turn off cruise control settings.
•Stay behind a snowplow. The road behind the plow is the safest place to drive.
•Keep aware of black ice conditions on surfaces such as bridge decks and entrance and exit ramps.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety urges motorists to buckle up, drive at safe speeds, pay attention and use a designated driver or another safe alternative to avoid driving impaired.
